Home Improvement Don'ts
What about a list of things you really should not ever do to your house though
? There are some fairly obvious ones like paint it bright pink or burn it down of course but more seriously, here is a rundown of a few of the biggest home improvement donts.
Dont Do Your Own Plumbing DIY plumbing looks easy in the how to books and certainly a very handy person may be more than capable of doing some plumbing basics, but for larger, more complex projects it is not worth taking the risk of taking it on in order to save a few bucks here and there. Apart from the obvious potential for flooding danger, many enthusiastic amateur plumbers do not realize that there are fairly strict standards and requirements laid out in the International Building Code that pertain to plumbing and, if your handiwork does not come up to code, it will probably cost more to fix the problems than it would have done to hire a licensed plumber in the first place.
Dont Knock Down Walls At least not before you have determined whether or not the wall is load bearing, which is harder to figure out than you might imagine. If you want to add more space to your home by taking out the dining room wall, thats fine, but at the very least have a construction professional or structural engineer check out the wall before you begin. If it turns out that the wall is indeed supporting large parts of the house it may still be possible to take it out but it is a delicate and tricky job that should always be left to the pros.
Dont Do Your Own Electrical Work Just as many rules govern electrical work as plumbing and doing your own wiring comes with the added risk of electrocution.
Dont Remodel Too Much If you have the money to spare to remodel your house from top to bottom that is great. However, before you go all Bob Vila keep in mind the type of neighborhood your home is actually located in. If your home is way out of line with all the rest of the houses on the block, for example they all have above ground pools, but you build an Olympic size inground pool with cabanas and built in hot tubs, you can be sure that it is very unlikely that you will ever recoup your investment should you decide to sell up.
Dont Be the Bad Yard Family It is time consuming to cut the lawn and often when you get home tired from another days hard work the idea of spending an hour weeding rather than watching the TV is a far from appealing one, but everyone hates the bad yard family. You know, theres one in every neighborhood, the messy yard that is the eyesore of the block. The neighbors may never confront you personally but they will definitely whisper behind your back. If you really dont have the time to keep up with the landscaping yourself hire someone, your neighbors will love you for it.
