Home Of Poi: What Is It?
Ill be honest, I have never heard of Home Of Poi before
, so it did take some searching around to find websites that had them or even knew what it was called. In all truth, I did find a few websites that talked about the Maori people of New Zealand, so these are nothing new, but maybe a little new to the rave world as we know it. "POI" is the Maori word for "ball" on a cord. The POI was used, many years ago, by the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand to increase their flexibility and strength in their hands and arms as well as improving coordination.
Wahine (female) dancers perform the Maori POI, a dance performed with balls attached to flax strings, swung rhythmically. Those pictured to the right are using short POI. The POI dance was originally used by the Maori women for keeping their hands flexible for weaving and by the men for strength and coordination required during battle. POI are also used as a training aid for other ancient weapons like the Mere or Patu (Short club).
Knowing this, I then started to search for Home Of Poi as well as Rave Poi Toys and I found a variety of toys and videos showing you how these work. I would have to say that these are some of the coolest raver toys around. Poi can be performed in the dark to dramatic effect when spinners use poi containing a light source, such as UV-sensitive materials, LED lights, or chemical glow sticks. Glowstringing, or using glowsticks swung from shoelaces, is popular at festivals and raves. Here are some specific categories and types you should take a look at:
- Home Of Poi, Devil Sticks: Home of Poi makes some really great devilsticks. Their fire sticks are easy to control and have a great long burn time, and their standard tapered devil sticks have great grip and are extremely visible to both you and your audience. You can find some cool videos at YouTube for how to handle these and some neat things to do with them. I have seen videos from children as well as the older generation!
- Home Of Poi Fire Toys: As the name says, these deal with fire, maybe not a great thing for raves, but they are usually used in events such as juggling shows, circuses, and other outdoor events. You have everything from Fire Devil Sticks and Fire Nunchaku's to Sliding Fire Orbit and Medium Cathedral Fire Poi. I have seen videos of these specifically and yes you have to be pretty good at doing this or you might get burnt, but its a cool thing to learn. I would think you would do it without the fire first to make sure you can master THAT without hitting your arms or any other part of your body and then adding fire later on.
- Home of Poi Juggling Equipment: These items are all about juggling acts with LED or fire. They have LED strobe, fade, juggling balls, fire devil sticks, Jugglo LED Juggling Balls (7 Color Fade Jugglo Pro light up glowing juggling balls contain the latest in LED technology! Our amazing new LED lights slowly fade and blend through 7 different colors! The new tough LED lights spend a few seconds on each color and then slowly fade into the next color. Red to yellow to green to blue to turquoise to purple to white and everything in between.), rainbow balls and much more!
