Home Of The Leaning Tower - Pisa
For year, we may only know the Pisa Tower, but never notice that Pisa is in fact a city in Central Italy
. The city is located on the right bank of River Arno with a Mediterranean climate.
People who came here were mainly attracted by Leaning Tower of Pisa and in their mind; it is the only thing to see in the city. However, if you have this kind of thought, you may miss other treasures inside the city because besides the Leaning Tower, there is a lot to see.
However, first, lets still go to the Leaning Tower to have a look since it is so famous. If you come to Pisa city and only see Pisa Tower, that will be a little bit pity; on the contrary, if you come to Pisa and never see Pisa Tower, it will definitely be a shame.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa is actually the bell tower of the cathedral of the city of Pisa, which is just located behind the Cathedral. The reason why it draws so many attentions is due to the fact that, it doesnt stand vertically but instead it leaning to the southeast. It was not the designers creative idea which you may hope so; in fact, from its construction in 1173, it already started to lean because of poor foundation and loose substrate which was also caused by people, yet undesirably.
In most cases, according to a normal architects logic, this was a big mistake and could be a disaster and therefore the building should be tore down and rebuilt. Thats why in other places, there is no leaning tower. However, the builders of Pisa Tower somehow insisted to continue the construction and finally turned a possible architecture disaster to a miracle which is now such a tourism attraction in the world.
The aim of building this tower is to keep the Cathedral of Pisa accompany. Without a sturdy foundation, the tower had three stories high by 1178 and started to lean. However, during the same period, the rulers of the city were busy with battles with Genoa, Lucca and Florence which were far more important than a leaning tower. The construction programme halted for nearly a century and only restarted in 1272.
The peace of this century allow enough time to build the tower in the scheduled time, otherwise, the tower could have collapsed before the end of the construction.
The following architect tried to correct the leaning situation of the tower, but the efforts ended up with making the tower keeping leaning in one direction. The tower was completed in 1319.
What is interesting that too much of a lean could lead to the death of the tower while too little of a lean could never make it a worldwide attraction.
Nowadays, with the development of technology, architects and scientists has found a way to make the tower stable.
