Pergola design and construction is probably one of the most difficult shades to get right

. Unlike other shades, it is not attached to the house, and instead of using fabric, is mainly made of wooden columns and crossbeams. In this sense, it is an unconventional shade because it does not block all light. Many people like the open feeling of a pergola.

Instead of stretching out a piece of fabric, the posts of a pergola hold up wooden slats that shade against only a portion of sunlight. Pergolas are found arching over patios and sometimes in gardens. A miniature version of a pergola is sometimes known as an arbor. Arbors function as entry points to foot trails of the garden grounds.

The construction of a pergola demands a lot of effort. The initial phase requires digging holes to sink the support beams into the ground. Two or more cross bars should be hoisted on to the top of the support beams. These serve as a scaffold onto which a lattice of cross beams are placed. It is recommended that three or more people assist in the operation.

When the pergola design is finished and constructed, the home owner usually takes the step of personalizing it. Fabric may nevertheless be attached to the sides or top to increase the shade effect.
