Babysitting is a great gig for students and even postgraduates who are looking to earn a little extra money. It is flexible and can be fun. You get to play like you are a little kid again. Each gig is usually different from the last, since kids are so unpredictable, which is a great way to keep your job interesting. It certainly keeps you on your toes. If you are babysitting at night you have the advantage of putting the kids to bed and getting paid to watch TV, read your book, raid their pantry, or do whatever else you want. The only downside to this is that being the only one awake in a strange house at night can be a little frightening. You do not know the noises or shadows that this house makes like you know the ones in your own house. At this point, your and the kids personal safety as well as the home security all become a worry and a definite priority.

If you are babysitting for a family that realizes babysitting may be a bit frightening at times, with all that responsibility and being the only one awake at night, then they should do whatever it takes to make you feel at ease. Besides leaving you a list of emergency phone numbers, they should inform you about their home security features such as surveillance camera.

With a home security camera set up outside of the house and a TV monitor inside, you can keep an eye on any action going on outside. If you hear a suspicious noise, rather than going to the window you can just look at the TV monitor. If there is an intruder outside, you can handle the situation from inside without making the intruder aware of you. If the doorbell rings you should definitely not answer it unless you are expecting someone. Even then, you should check to see who it is first. This is easy to do with the surveillance camera and the TV monitor.

Surveillance cameras can also be set up within the house. A baby monitor is a form of a surveillance camera and they are not just for audio anymore. Most monitors now have video as well, allowing you to see the child from downstairs, without the need to go upstairs to their room and disturb them. If you hear a noise from the child you can look at the monitor to see what the problem is.

Home security cameras are an excellent way to protect your house, especially with a babysitter there. When you leave the house you want your babysitter and children to feel safe without you home.
