Have a reliable neighbor keep an eye on you house- You cant necessarily rely on an electronic home security system to keep your house safe. Having an actual person that lives near you keep watch on the house is an important step to take to ensure its security. Make sure your neighbor knows how long you will be gone for, where you are staying and how they can reach you in the event of an emergency. A watchful neighbor is vital in making sure that suspicious activity is not going on, and they can be your eyes and ears while you are away.

Check smoke detectors before you leave- If you do not have properly installed smoke detectors in every area of your house, then you must have these put in place before you leave town. If you already have them, check to make sure that they all have working batteries and are functioning properly. This is the first line of defense in preventing catastrophic damage from a fire, so be sure you do not overlook this important step.

Invest in a home alarm system if you have not already done so- Many people think that an alarm system is an unnecessary investment, especially if they live in a safe neighborhood. Put your mail and newspaper on hold- A mailbox overflowing with mail and a driveway filled with unread newspapers is a sure indication that you are out of town. It is easy to call the post office and have them stop your mail while you are gone. You can also call your newspaper provider and simply tell them that you are not interested in receiving the paper.

As you can see, these are all easy steps that you can take to ensure the safety of your home while you are away. Proper home security starts with you, the homeowner, so be sure to take the steps that are needed to keep your house safe.
