Home Security Systems On The Rise
However, a determined criminal will break a window to gain access and many have the knowledge and tools to breach a lock in seconds
. As a result, increasing numbers of homeowners have been utilizing monitored home security systems to ensure the safety of their loved ones, valuables and homes. Not only can a monitored security system protect against criminal break-ins, they can warn of fire and carbon monoxide levels. Insurance companies will often grant a 10% discount on homeowner's insurance if the home is equipped with an actively monitored system.
These security systems vary in levels of protection and price, depending on the features. Some install the alarm code keypad and other equipment free of charge if the customer monthly live monitoring contract. The contract can be for two years or more. Still others charge for equipment, installation and require a live monitoring contract.
A basic system usually includes the alarm code keypad hardwired into a wall, sensors or leads on exterior doors and all downstairs windows. Additionally, most are also wired into smoke detectors to spread the live monitoring protection to fire hazards as well. There are many add-on features that can increase the cost. It is recommended that the sensors or leads be placed on all upstairs windows and balcony doors as well. Many consumers fail to pay for this extra cost, because they believe that criminals will not or cannot get to the upper floor windows. Unfortunately, most criminals are aware that homeowners often do not extend their security system protection to upper floor areas. Therefore it is recommended that homeowners spend the extra money on this feature. Other features include carbon monoxide sensors, motion sensors, glass breakage sensors, and cell phone backup - in case wires are cut to the land line.
There are numerous other add-on features not mentioned above. The type of system in which a consumer chooses to invest depends on many factors. It is ultimately up to him to make the final decision regarding level of protection.
