Home Security Tips for Bachelors
There are plenty of reasons to pursue a bachelor lifestyle
, though it has gotten sort of a bad rep in recent years. Not everyone has to be married, and not every man who chooses to spend his time at home alone is a cad or a philanderer. Just as many men as women are significantly hurt by breakups, and require the solace of recovering by living alone. And likewise, there is nothing wrong with anyone who needs their own space and prefers to not live with a significant other.
However, there is often a wrong impression that just because someone is a man, issues of home security and safety dont matter as much. While this concept is mostly rooted in the fact that men are allegedly stronger and can scare off burglars, the choice is that gender does not have as much to do with whether or not a household or a person is vulnerable. Criminals will case and rob just about any house if it looks appealing, and knowing the sort of toys that many bachelors have around, would often prefer to take their chances with a single mans crash pad than with a married couple.
However, its easy for any sort of bachelor to take some preventative measures against any sort of crime. Its just important to remember that being prepared doesnt equal being scared, and that its just as masculine to be wary and planning as it is to say you will fight anyone who breaks into your home.
First and foremost: never, ever give your home alarm system code to anyone. Not friends, not girlfriends, and not random people. This is the easiest way that people are robbed so much of the time, when friends or girlfriends come in while you are at work and rob the place blind. Your code is something meant for you and only you, with the exception of perhaps a best friend or a blood relative. Dont be tricked otherwise!
Dont showcase your wealth--or goods. It doesnt matter if youre rich or not, if you have a bunch of expensive, desirable things that are in plain view to anyone walking down the street, you are making it harder on yourself. One of the biggest things about home security is that you dont want someone to choose your house: you want them to want to rob another house, instead. It is a lot easier to accomplish this when your Wii and your flat-screen TV arent in sight of the road. So plan your interior decorating better.
Try to not advertise your own absence. Whether its travel for work or travel for leisure, sometimes single men spend a lot of time on the road, or spend the night elsewhere. And while theres nothing wrong with this, if you have obvious tells that you havent come home, your house is a lot more vulnerable to a break-in. Be sure to always lock all doors and windows, set the home alarm system, and try to not give it away that youre not there. Invest in a motion-activated light system inside and outside, and try to put some lights on timers so that it appears someone is alert and moving around the house.
