You may think that by virtue of working at home you can be more lax about your home security because you are in the house, presiding over it. In fact, the opposite is true. Depending on the nature of your work, it is important that you take certain precautions to safeguard your equipment and ensure that you and your home are protected even while you are in it.

For starters, chances are that you work on a computer. Make sure that your desk does not face the window as you do not want passers by to see that there is an expensive machine in the house. Situate your desk so that you can make use of the natural light but that you are not facing the outside. It is also important that if you use any other expensive equipment you keep it out of site and away from the window as you do not want to attract negative attention. If you have to transport your equipment, make sure that you put it in an unassuming bag or carrying case so that no one is aware of the contents of the bag. This is true if you have to take your laptop to a coffee-shop as well. When you work from home, your home security precautions must be elevated as all of your equipment is stored in the home with you.

If there isn't one in place already, you will definitely need to install a home alarm system to make sure that in the event of an intrusion or emergency that the proper help is contacted. Don't think that just because you are in your home, that nothing can happen. Treat it as if you are not there and lock your doors, activate your alarm and ensure that all of your expensive equipment is used away from the window and out of plain sight. Working from home is definitely a luxury and is a great way to manage your own time but by the same token you must take added security measures to ensure that you and your belongings are kept safe at all times. It is a good idea to invest in a safe or designate a closet with a lock as a safe for your expensive equipment and gadgets such as cameras, video equipment or anything else you use in your profession.
