In this day and age where most of us have to work so hard to buy nice things for our homes, home security is a huge concern. Which method of home security do you choose to protect our valuables from would be thieves and opportunists, has become an extremely important question. Choosing the right alarm can be a daunting task, as there are so many different varieties available; it is sometimes hard to know where to start.

So do you choose an alarm system or a big dog?

Even though, burglar alarms have been around for a long time, the preferred method of protection used by our ancestors was a dog. A dog can protect your property and be a frightfully good deterrent against people attempting to break into your home. However you do need space and time to keep any pet so this might not be the option for you. There are many different alarm systems available on the market at the moment, and the decision will need some careful research before you find the best alarm suited for your home security.

The first ever electric alarm system was invented in Boston by a man called Edwin Holmes in 1852, and home security systems have come along way since then. Holmes design featured a revolutionary tripwire which electrically powered a solenoid which in turn, struck a gong when it was set off. Holmes then moved to New York with his new business and in 1905 he sold the business to the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. The company then linked the system to police and fire departments, using a remarkably advanced electrical grid that had been developed in New York.

From the 1970's many alarm systems came with motion sensors using basic ultrasonic technology that was emitted from a sensor and then reflected back to the device. Any change in sound would result in the alarm system being activated.

Of course, many improvements were made in the following years and in the 1980's motion sensors were designed to use infrared technology to avoid false positives. Superior electrical components were also introduced to establish full home protection systems.
