Home Treadmill Training Tips for the Working Professional
Home Treadmill Training Tips for the Working Professional
Let's be honest about this... you don't want to go the gym. It's overpriced, over-crowed, smelly, dirty, and the equipment is rundown, old, and rickety. And really, do you even have time to go to the gym? Remember, you just had a long day at work and now you have to worry about dinner, deal with your kid's homework, do some laundry, clean the house, wash the dishes, walk the dog - and oh, by the way, your favorite show, sports team, or movie is on TV tonight.
If you're like me, you're probably tired from just reading that paragraph. We all have WAY too many things to do, and unbelievable amounts of responsibility in our lives. Sure, you want to go to the gym, but for many people, it's just not a realistic option. So why bother going to "the gym" when you have "my gym" in the other room?
If you're a working professional, you understand what it means to multitask. At the end of the day, you're tired and want to relax - but if you want to keep your current physique, you have to do something. On TV, you're going to see those home workout videos being advertised, but a lot of the time, you need to buy supplementary equipment or commit to a program that might be too time-consuming for your lifestyle. If you're looking to stay healthy, meaning: get more blood pumping in your heart, give you more energy during the day, and keep your weight down - you don't need to look beyond simple treadmill training.
For those looking to train from home, purchasing a running machine is a terrific investment. Now, for the naysayers who claim that cheap treadmills are boring or not as visually stimulating as running through a forest... first, if you like running, then you like running, it shouldn't matter where or how you do it. And second, not everyone has a forest in their backyard. For those of you who live in a bad neighborhood, or live where it snows, or whatever else might be the case - don't listen to the naysayers.
The reason you decide to pursue treadmill training is because you care about your body. Don't let anyone tell you that your way of running is wrong - your body will tell you what feels right. Here are a few additional pieces of advice for those who want to train from home, but don't have all the time in the world.
- Stretch before getting on the folding treadmill. You don't want to pull anything.
Allocate time to warm up and cool down before and after your workout.
Do not jump onto the machine at full speed. On the front end, it's harder for your body to adjust to the speed. On the back end, it'll take longer to recover from the workout.
Warm ups and cools downs only take an additional 5 minutes
- By all means, park your treadmill in front of a television. Engaging in an enjoyable tv show, movie, or music channel will allow your mind to focus on something else, and not the current strain on your body.
- Do not let anyone tell you how long your workout must last. Do what feels comfortable on any given night. Also, you don't have to run. People with heart conditions or joint issues are encouraged to walk.
Really, anything beyond ten minutes is good for your body. For effective cardiovascular exercise, you should aim to be in your target heart rate for at least 20 minutes.
- When using a treadmill in your home, realize that your body temperature will rise higher, faster. This is because you're not in a large gym, or outdoors. Imagine running in a sauna (but to a lesser degree). This is why your body will feel more exhausted sooner rather than later. Moral of the story: ALWAYS have a water bottle nearby... a towel too.
You'll also get tired because outdoors, your pace is probably inconsistent - but a treadmill forces you to stay on pace.
- To better simulate outdoor wind resistance, increase the incline 1-2 levels.
Many people say that working out is a "life choice" but don't confuse that with a "life-altering choice." You do not have to become a gym rat to stay healthy.
Realize that you CAN train from home and cheap treadmill trai
