Exercise aims at ultimately strengthening the muscles of the lower back and abdomen, apart from releasing the pressure on the sciatic nerve, while providing relief from pain. Walking or swimming or using an exercise bike are some of the moderate forms of exercise recommended when you have sciatica. Other external applications include poultices of horse radish (applied for minimum of 1 hour) or mustard seeds (max. 10 minutes) or crushed flaxseed dipped in hot water. All of these relieve the pressure and pain almost effortlessly.
Certain herbs and vegetables are known to provide sciatica pain relief, when taken internally. Thus, the juice of potato and celery leaves is an effective remedy. Carrot and beet juice can be added to this, for additional nutrients and flavour.
Elderberry juice or elderberry tea or chamomile tea are good for soothing the nerves.So also, garlic in any form, particularly garlic milk, made by crushing 2 cloves of garlic in a cup of milk.
Vitamin B1 or Thiamine is also known for its nerve-soothing properties. Common foods containing B1 vitamin, are green peas, lentils, bananas, liver, beef, pork and unpolished grains. Supplements of this vitamin can also be considered. Calcium and magnesium containing foods help to control spasmodic pain, which is sometimes felt with sciatica.
It is also important to maintain a good posture, and avoid slouching in order to keep the spine properly aligned. Any misalignment of the vertebrae can also aggravate sciatica.
If all the above are kept in mind and tried out as and when suitable, sciatica pain can be done away with within a short period of a week.
