Home Turbine Challenges
The home turbine is not the hardest project you will face in life
. But, if you are too quick on the draw or do your upfront thinking incompletely, you very likely will end up wasting some time that could be better spent in other ways having to correct mistakes that you didn't have to make.
These are the challenges you will face with the home turbine project...
Getting it put in the right location - This is always the most critical thing to consider. There are any number of places on your land where you could put a wind turbine but there will be one place that is clearly better, from an energy perspective, than all others. Also, you want to pick a location that you don't personally mind looking at all the time. With any kind of wind turbines, the device is going to be spinning constantly and this could be an annoyance to many people, so pick your location thoughtfully.
Taking maximum advantage of the wind you have - You may have enough wind to not only power your house, but also to export power back to the electricity grid and make some money from it. Or, you may have so little wind that the project will not work, even if you have a super-low wind speed home turbine. The only way to really know is to test and measure the wind you have with an anemometer.
Making sure you avoid any community hassles - I know it is hard to imagine, but many in your local community and neighborhood will be against you having a wind turbine kit. You would think in this day and age with so many in the news media acting like renewable energy products are a foregone conclusion, that it would be impossible for community or neighborhood to hold on to that attitude. However, that is just not the case and many have the NIMBY attitude - "Not In My Back Yard". This will of course diffuse over time but for now it is reality and a holdover from a previous time when wind turbines were thought to be elective and not really necessary.
In conclusion, the home turbine can make you a lot of electricity over a long period of time, but you should spend your time initially and nail down these details, otherwise you will sub-optimize your time and energy. In the future, the home turbine will become as much a part of the urban landscape as any other home device.
