My interest in MT began several years ago when I began searching for a career that would be more fulfilling

. I have always been fascinated with medicine; even while obtaining my first degree in Anthropology, I was most fascinated with forensics, diet, disease and linguistics. I worked my way through college: it took 9 years to obtain my bachelors degree, as I had to work full-time while attending school part-time. I am seeking a program that will allow me to quickly and successfully achieve my goal of becoming a medical transcriptionist.

I am a mother of 3 children, and like many families, we have suffered severe hardship. My husbands career is commission based, and therefore, we have some very lean months. Unfortunately, anthropologists are not in high demand, nor are they well paid. Although I am a self-taught bookkeeper, I would be forced to commute to find a job; requiring child-care and transportation costs. I did this for several years before I found that the cost of working away from home consumed most of my salary.

There are several advantages to working as a medical transcriptionist. Providing quality technical support for health care providers is important, but it is the care of the patient which is most critical. The providers rely on strong transcriptionists to relate their thoughts to a patients notes. As longevity continues to increase, the provision of quality health care technicians also increases; therefore medical transcription as a career will continue to grow, opening new opportunities every day. Like most home typist jobs or medical record jobs, my reasons for becoming a medical transcriptionist include my commitment to care, job availability, a flexible schedule, and the desire to make a difference in the life of my family and those of others.

Future MT piqued my curiosity more than the other programs I investigated. It offers a complete program at a fraction of the cost. In addition, the ability to apply for a scholarship directly through your program is encouraging. Having looked at all of the courses and online degree programs available, their course provides everything I need to learn about MT and makes my desire a very realistic goal. The course is thorough, and includes actual dictation notes for training, which is crucial when learning the combination of new terminology and dialect differences. In addition, the course is self-paced, which allows me to take the time to thoroughly understand a lesson before I move to the next one. The goals I wish to achieve as a medical transcriptionist are numerous. Personally, the ability to learn a new career at my age is rewarding in itself. I have always wanted to contribute to the medical community and now I have that opportunity. Additionally, I see the field of MT as one of great flexibility. I know that I have some hard work ahead of me, but within 2 years I plan to have enough experience and credentials to start my own medical transcription business.
