What areas can be scrimped or cut back so that you can afford the things that should be included? Here are some tips to help you understand which upgrade options are worth considering, because they may be more expensive to add later on.

If you are offered an upgrade in the amount of floor space, consider taking this option on. Building additional floor space at a later time will be more costly and difficult. You may find that you are prevented from building on in the future because of legal issues.This is one upgrade that definitely is worth the money and should be seriously considered.

Another common upgrade offered by builders and electricians is the number of electrical outlets provided. It seems as though you can never have too many power outlets, even though it seems as though there will be plenty when you view the plans. When additional power outlets are added after the house is finished, the cost is higher and holes will have to be cut into the walls to accommodate them. If you are offered an upgrade of extra power outlets, you would benefit from taking this option up; you will be glad you did. Be assured that this is another optional upgrade that is worth the price.

Exactly the same rationale can be applied to the installation of additional cable and telephone jacks; these will cost more to add later on. Seriously consider taking up an option for additional cable and telephone connections. Extra connections are very useful and you will probably be able to decide where they can be placed in the house. It is always cheaper to have work done at the same time as other jobs, so consider having a fax line installed as well. Where the cable and telephone jacks are positioned often determines where you can put your furniture, so this is an important issue to consider when deciding about this upgrade. This is also an optional upgrade that is worth the money.

Upgrading the kitchen is another common optional extra offered by builders. While your dream kitchen may be very expensive, there are certain elements of it which could be installed during the building or renovation stage that would be too expensive to do later on. Certain parts of the kitchen can be updated in the future without too much trouble, including the flooring, cabinets and counters; but if you want to change the shape of the kitchen or add a kitchen island, this can be expensive, and sometimes impossible. If you have to do major alterations later, these can be expensive and so messy, so have the basic shape and conformation of your dream kitchen included at the building phase. Once the basics of your dream kitchen are in place, including the plumbing and the power, you will save money later when you complete it, even if it does take a little while.
