Most new parents are so excited about the advent of a child that they have difficulty waiting for that first doctor visit to confirm a pregnancy. Instead, they rush to the nearest pharmacy or mass merchandise store to buy a home pregnancy test. These kits may be used two weeks after the mother's egg has been fertilized by the sperm. If used correctly, manufacturers insist that a home pregnancy test is 99% accurate.
Hopeful parents usually prefer a home pregnancy test because they are private and work quickly. The home pregnancy test works by measuring the amount of human chorionic gonadoptropin (hCG) in a woman's urine. A higher level of hCG will result in a positive home pregnancy test reading while a normal level will result in a negative reading.
The way pregnancy is indicated on these tests will depend on the manufacturer and the price a pregnant woman is willing to pay. A woman first urinates directly on a special stick or instrument or dips it into a clean cup of urine. The markings for positive and negative on the pregnancy test may be two different colors, a plus and minus sign, or even the words "yes" and "no."
Although quite simple to use, a home pregnancy test can give faulty results if the directions are not followed carefully. Do not skip steps and time each part of the process accurately. Taking the test as soon as you get up in the morning also gives more accurate results, as your morning urine is more concentrated.
Women who are unsure about when their last menstrual period occurred because of an irregular cycle may want to wait longer before using a home pregnancy test. If the sample is collected before enough hCG build up in the blood, a false negative will result. Women who receive a negative result on one test, but still do not begin menstruation, should wait a week or two and try another test.
The test for pregnancy given by a doctor measures exact amounts of hCG and can even tell how long the pregnancy has been in effect. Therefore, if a home pregnancy test doesn't provide the assurance a woman seeks, she should consult her physician for those answers.
