Mint is a popular home remedyfor an upset stomach. Mint has a soothing effect on the stomach. Maybe you remember you grandparents handing out mint candy or peppermint after meals to ease digestion. The menthol oil form the plants is what gives mint its healing properties. Buy natural mint candies or peppermint candy. Peppermint candy isn't all natural but still contains menthol. Use mint leaves to make a tea or add a drop or two of peppermint oil to a cold beverage. It isn't hard to grow you own mint leaves. If you have heartburn, stay away from mint.
Baking soda is another excellent home remedyfor upset stomachs. It is a common household item that some people use to brush their teeth and it is inexpensive. Baking soda is a bicarbonate which helps to neutralize acid. It normally starts easing an upset stomach in ten to fifteen minutes. Drink a whole eight ounce glass of water followed by a tablespoon of water and then a half glass of water. You can also mix teaspoon of baking soda with cup of warm water. Repeat every three hours. Be careful if you are pregnant or have hypertension. Baking soda can increase blood pressure and water retention.
There are a few foods and drinks you can eat to calm an upset stomach and reduce heartburn. Bananas work the same as an antacid to reduce heart burn and calm stomach pain. Try eating papaya or pineapple to settle a stomach ache if you already have indigestion. Many have claimed a teaspoon of mustard works to reduce stomach acid. Sometimes the problem is too little acid. Take a teaspoon of vinegar to put more a little more juice in your stomach.
Plain toast and crackers are also good to calm the stomach without irritation. Drink Sprite or 7-up. These drinks are carbonated with no caffeine so they are fine for the stomach. Don't drink milk for heartburns. Milk feels soothing going down but it contains proteins and fats that could cause the stomach to secrete more acid. There are also some foods to avoid like tomato products, tomatoes, alcohol, chocolate, spicy food, and citrus fruits. Sleeping at an upright angle or on your left side can keep acid in its place.
