Homemade Christmas Gifts

With the Great Recession rearing its' ugly head and nearly 10% of the nation unemployed

(not including those who have already dropped from the roles, which would move the numbers closer to those of the Great Depression) and unemployment about to run out for those who are fortunate enough to have gotten extended benefits, this is no time for anyone to be spending money on buying expensive Christmas presents. Instead, you should consider looking into some homemade Christmas gifts.

Now the traditional homemade Christmas gift, as popularized by Chris Rock in Everybody Hates Chris is some form of silly macaroni art. However, you don't have to be quite that cheesy. Here's a few great ideas you can try at home:

Home colored candles. You can buy some basic scented or even unscented candles for a very cheap price and then color them yourself. Here's how: What you'll need is of course the candles, also a pencil with a dull tip or even an awl would work. You should also use some permanent magic markers as well, or use a bit of acrylic paint (though the markers are likely easier). Now, use your pencil or awl to carefully draw various patterns on your candle. They don't have to be really fancy patterns either. You can just make circles and stars all around the candle. Then, fill in the circles and stars with your colored markers. If you use a sceneted candle, it will be a gift that people can use for years to come in their bathroom or bedroom,

Another cool craft idea for a homemade Christmas gift is the rainbow shirt. What you do here is to get yourself some plain white T-shirts and some dye. It can be one color or several colors of dye. Then, what you do is, you take the t-shirt, bundle it into a tight knot, dilute the dye and dip the shirt into it. You unwind your knot and you've got a tie die T-shirt. Want more colors? Let the shirt dry, then repeat with a different color. Don't do too many though, or your T-shirt will make people dizzy.

Whatever you do for a homemade Christmas gift , the important thing here is to look for something that says, "I care." Ultimately, Christmas isn't about the latest and greatest video game or the cool camera phone or the diamond necklace. It's about family. And if you show your family you care, that's the best Christmas gift of all.
