Homemade Christmas Present Ideas
With the Great Recession rearing its' ugly head and nearly 10% of the nation unemployed
(not including those who have already dropped from the roles, which would move the numbers closer to those of the Great Depression) and unemployment about to run out for those who are fortunate enough to have gotten extended benefits, this is no time for anyone to be spending money on buying expensive Christmas presents. Instead, you should consider looking into some homemade Christmas present ideas.
Now the traditional homemade Christmas present idea, as popularized by Chris Rock in Everybody Hates Chris is some form of silly macaroni art. However, you don't have to be quite that cheesy. Here's a few great ideas you can try at home:
A scrapbook. This is a fun project which your loved ones will likely cherish for years to come. All you need to is to purchase a photo album from the local Wal Mart and you're off. Basically, hunt through all the various photos you've shot over the years. If they're all on disk, then consider getting some of them printed. You want to arrange them to show how your lives together have grown and become intertwined. You should also include little captions to show the story, and make it almost like an adult version of a picture book.
Or, if you prefer, try making a video scrapbook for a homemade Christmas present. This is something that anyone can do if they have time and little bit of know how. Basically, you'll want to get some software that lets you put together slide shows. You can use the free Open Office and the presentation section (similar to Microsoft Power point) to do this. You would then pick out all the photos that you like and arrange them into a giant slide show. Throw in some captions periodically to show the stages of your lives and add in some background music and you're good to go. You can then burn the result onto a DVD Rom and display it in the living room on Christmas afternoon before the feast.
Whatever you do for a homemade Christmas present idea , the important thing here is to look for something that says, "I care." Ultimately, Christmas isn't about the latest and greatest video game or the cool camera phone or the diamond necklace. It's about family. And if you show your family you care, that's the best Christmas gift of all.
