Homemade Dog Biscuits Better Than Store Bought

Why would you want to take the time and effort to make homemade dog biscuits for your dog

? There are many commercial brands available. Why not just buy one of them? Your dog won't care, right?

The best reason to make dog treats yourself is control of the quality of the ingredients you use. Chances are you are going to use the same ingredients you would use for yourself. If you were cooking beef for your dog, you wouldn't search out "animal feed" grade beef; you'd use the same quality beef you use for your family.

The same can't be said for the companies that make dog foods and dog treats. Look at the list of ingredients in a can of food or a bag of treats. Do you recognize all of them? Do you know what they really are? What about "beef and bone meal" an ingredient in a popular dog biscuit?

It is, "The rendered product from beef tissues, including bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents, except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices." It is made from beef parts which are not suitable for human consumption, a low quality ingredient used to boost the protein percentage.

You wouldn't eat that yourself, so why would you feed it to your dog? Yes, if you put food in front of him he'll eat it, so it seems he doesn't care, but what choice does he have? Not all ingredients in dog foods are bad, but there are definitely many that you should avoid feeding your dog.

If you want your dog to have a well balanced, nutritionally sound diet your best choice is to make his food yourself. Homemade dog biscuits and other foods are not that difficult to make and don't take much time because you can make a batch that lasts for two or three weeks at one time. Heck, since you're using the same ingredients in his food that you use in yours, you might even sneak one of his treats for yourself!
