The dog food industry is comparable to the human food industry. And I don't mean that in a good way.

Nearly all large brand name dog food companies put useless fillers in their products. These fillers are indigestible by dogs and only serve to give the animal a false sense of feeling full. Some of the additives can be dangerous.

Here's a list of commonly used ingredients in many of the dog foods you'll find in your nearest pet or grocery store -

Ground yellow corn (should NEVER be in pet foods. It's a cheap filler that dogs cannot digest)

Chicken-by-product meal (should NEVER be in pet foods. These are the feet, feathers, beaks, organs of dead, diseased or other chickens unfit for human consumption)

Whole wheat flour (should not be used as wheat is one of the most common allergens for dogs and provides no nutrition)

As you can see, these are not items you would want your dog to consume. Many common but dangerous problems your dog may have can be linked to these pet foods. Quality pet food will leave their coat shining, their breath smelling good, and your dog will have extra energy.

Here are some quality ingredients to look for -

Chicken meal

Ground brown rice

Turkey

Egg

Some people have taken the initiative to make their dogs meals and snacks at home. Guides and recipe books like Rover's Recipes provide healthy and inexpensive ways to feed your dog at home.

In my experience, pet owners generally think of their dog as a part of the family. In the same way that you wouldn't feed low quality and potentially dangerous foods to your children or relatives, you shouldn't feed them to your pet. To avoid extra trips to the vet or expensive medicine down the line, it's a good idea to keep your pet healthy during it's whole life.

An important note is to transition your pet's food slowly. An abrupt change can cause bowel problems or an upset stomach, especially for young puppies and older dogs. It can come in handy being as knowledgeable about your breed as possible. Some breeds (for example, German Shepherds) have naturally sensitive stomach and to prevent messes on your carpet and discomfort for your pet it's important to feed them a quality food.
