Homemade Drought Solutions

Many states are in drought-mode

Many states are in drought-mode. For instance, Austin, Texas, continues to go through the worst dry-spell since they started keeping records 116-years ago. But, strict water restrictions arent just limited to one place or one state.

Take it on a national scale; lets do the math. In the next few years over half of Americas states will be slammed with a water shortage. When you add-in the projection that the U.S. population will reach around 630-million people twice the current amount water conservation and management is critical.

Being conservative with your home water supply is not only the right thing to do; its a way to save your family some money.

When you think that three-fourths of the water used in the home is in the bathroom, thats the first place you should focus. Twenty-five percent gets flushed down the toilet. Every time you pull the handle, there go four-gallons of water. An ultra-low flush (ULF) toilet can cut that down to about two-gallons a flush.

Dont need a new toilet? Install a simple tank bank that will only put you out around two-bucks. While you wont see the same result as a ULF toilet, youll still save almost half-as-much as you would with a total toilet re-do.

By installing other water conservation devices like faucet aerators and low-flow showerheads, youll only have to peel-off less-than fifty-bucks for a retrofit.

Here are some other ways to conserve water indoors. Remember, every drop you save now keeps everyone with fresh, flowing water in the future:

Taking a bath? Put the plug in the tub before turning on the faucet

This not only saves time and water. Consider brushing your teeth while youre in the shower

If you dont want to brush in the shower, you can still save about twenty-five gallons of water a month by simply turning off the faucet while cleaning your teeth

Do you have a toilet that was installed before 1992? Purchase a displacement device and place it in the tank

Toilet flappers wear out and cause leaks. Replace it if its no longer functional

One way to tell if youve got a leaky toilet is by tossing a few drops of food coloring in the tank. Are you seeing any seepage in the toilet itself? Youve got a leak. By repairing the problem you could save as much as one-thousand gallons of water every month

On hot days when the kids want to cool off, put the sprinkler on the part of your lawn thats beginning to yellow

Make sure that everyone in the house tightly closes the faucet after they use it

While it may cost you initially, it will pay-off quickly. Thats why installing an instant water heater near your kitchen sink is cost effective. It keeps you from running the water until it gets hot

Dont want to take that route? Then simply insulate your hot water pipes. By wrapping the pipes, youll feel hot water at the faucet-level a little quicker

Use a pot of fresh cold water to wash your fruits and vegetables. This saves you from running a large amount from the tap

Whenever you steam or boil your foods, save the broth. You can make a nutritious soup with the stock

Rather than using the garbage disposal, create a compost bin in a corner of your backyard. Thats where you can dump your organic materials

Got fish? When cleaning the tank use the old water to give your indoor plants a nutrient-rich drink

When everyone in the family gets involved in water conservation, it can significantly reduce your water footprint. Take some time to teach your kids that water is a precious resource. And keep a record of the savings. The amount of money that stays in your wallet is a great incentive to find more ways to conserve.
