Homewood, Alabama is a city that has rich American traditional and cultural values, but has a welcomed stance for other cultures as well. In fact, 22% of the city's population has German or Irish heritage.
Homewood is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama and is located on the other side of the Red Mountain range from Birmingham.
According to the most recent census, Homewood has the highest population densities in the state, which definitely says something about the city. It is a city with employment opportunities, a good per capita income, excellent schools, a library that received government funding higher than the national average, natural reserves, parks and much, much more.
The city of Homewood was initially known as Edgewood, however Edgewood is now a business area in the city. For a new visitor, it's not very obvious that Edgewood houses most businesses in the city, because of its convenient and open office buildings, nearby parks, eateries and tree lined streets.
One of the most surprising facts about the city is its low crime rate (4.4 per 1000 people). In a city with such a high population, it is a blessing to have such a low crime rate. Part of the success can be attributed to Homewood's active citizen and neighborhood patrolling systems, which has resulted in maintaining a virtually crime free society.
Homewood has six schools and a local university, where residents are encouraged to join continuing education programs. Virginia College is a proprietary college in Homewood, which offers classes related to specific professions such as information technology, health and medical, office management, business and criminal justice. Certificates, diplomas as well as degrees can be obtained from Virginia College.
The Homewood High School Patriotic Marching Band is a proud member of the Marching Band Hall of Fame and has participated seven times in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, more than any other band outside New York.
Homewood is also home to Charles Ghigna, who is a famous children's book author and renowned author Anne George uses Homewood as the setting for her fictional series called "Southern Sisters Mysteries."
The major community festival is the "We Love Homewood" day, where the entire community gets together for a day full of food, music and lots of fun!
