Honda: Innovations for Mobility

Describing themselves as "first and foremost a mobility company"

, Honda are certainly innovators of new technologies designed to assist those facing mobility challenges. Amongst the latest developments is ASIMO, a robot developed specifically to mimic the movements of humans. ASIMO can walk forwards, backwards, sideways and climb stairs with human-like agility, making it able to perform everyday tasks to assist people lacking mobility.

The humanoid robot is the result of over two decades of research by Honda engineers.Early ASIMO models were developed to simulate human walking, with the next set focussing on walk stabilisation and climbing stairs. A head, body and arms were later added to improve balance and functionality, and finally the most recent ASIMO model arrived, at 5'2" and weighing in at just under 300 lbs, with full mobility. Not only can it move like a human, ASIMO has the ability to map its environment, register stationary objects and avoid moving ones.

Honda scientists hope that one day ASIMO will be able to assist the elderly or disabled to carry out simple day to day tasks.

Given Honda's investment in such projects as ASIMO, it is no surprise that they are taking part wholeheartedly in the government-funded Motability scheme. Motability helps disabled people and their families to become more mobile, offering them the option of exchanging their Higher Rate Mobility Allowance or War Pensioners mobility supplement for a brand new car every three years. Honda offer three models to choose from the Honda Jazz, Honda Civic or Honda Insight with any engine size.

Cars can also be adapted for drivers or passengers confined to a wheelchair. They include features such as a built-in ramp, wheelchair tie-downs and seat belts for wheelchair users. Custom controls are fitted for drivers. These specially modified vehicles give wheelchair users a level of independence they may not otherwise have.
