Hong Kong Heritage Trails - A Walking History Lesson That Youre Sure To Enjoy

Modern and bustling as Hong Kong is, the country also boasts of a proud and culturally rich heritage

. In an effort to give prominence to this heritage and to encourage locals and visitors alike, specific trails were drawn up. These trails, known as Heritage Trails are spread across Hong Kong in order to cover all aspects of Hong Kongs historic legacy.

The new territories have two trails, namely Ping Shan and Lung Yeuk Tau. Ping Shan is the oldest of the Heritage Trails and was inaugurated at the end of 1993. The heritage of the Tang clan a member of the five great Clans is what is mostly highlighted along this 1Km Trail. The Trail takes you through unique Chinese structures, the Tsui Sing Lau Pagoda - the only such ancient pagoda in Hong Kong, ancestral halls etc.

The Lung Yeuk Tau Trail named after the Leaping Dragon Mountains around it, began in 1999. The villages and communities of the clans along this trail still practice their age old traditions in their traditional homes. Experiencing one of their festivals would be an ideal treat.

The Central and Western District Heritage Trail has 3 separate routes which were incorporated at various times and is situated on Hong Kong Island itself.

The most recent additions to the Heritage trails are Wan Chai and Tai Tam Water Works Heritage Trails. These were launched in 2009 and take you through Hong Kongs rise from its roots, through its colonisation times to the present. It includes many historic buildings and wonderful bridges, dams and water ways.
