Hong Kong Park and Aviary An Expedition with Nature
The Hong Park and Aviary is situated at the heart of the city in Central Hong Kong and covers an area of over 80,000 square meters. This beautiful park boasts many manmade attractions within its vicinity and is home to many modern day facilities, natural landscapes and ancient history. Officially built in 1971 as a private garrison known as the Victoria Garrison it was re-developed and revealed to the public as a park in the year 1991.
However, over the long years, the park has preserved a number of these old garrison buildings and they serve as great attractions to the park. Visitors to the park will find an array of facilities, historical sites and attractions. Some of the parks historical sites are the Flagstaff House Museum of Teaware, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, the Education Centre and the Marriage Registry Building.
The park also boasts an artificial lake, a waterfall, fountains, natural landscapes, a greenhouse, a garden plaza and a tai chi garden. Visitors to the park can also enjoy the Central Garden (a pavilion surrounded by dancing fountains) and the Conservation Corner (that boasts over 100 species of dragonflies, wild squirrels, fruit trees and other rich plantations). Sports enthusiasts can also seek out the state-of-the-art air-conditioned multi-purpose Sports Centre that houses indoor sports such as badminton, basketball, netball, table tennis and volleyball.
A main attraction at the park is its Aviary; the walkthrough aviary built among the trees using a canopy is a must see when strolling the park. The Edward Youde Aviary boasts a large water pool, waterfalls, various plantations and trees. The aviary further houses a collection of over 90 species of birds that include pigeons, partridges, thrushes, barbets, bluebirds, fruit doves, Australian pelicans and broadbills among many others. The aviary also possesses a caged display area that shelters more birds, so sightseers can view them at a closer range. These birds include the white crested hornbill, the great pied hornbill and other bird species from the Malaysian region.
