Hong Lung's Bowl and Chopsticks
An illustrious Chinese Martial Artist and Teacher's descendant encounters him via Historical records and accounts. Martial Arts Teacher or 'Sifu' himself, he brings together key episodes and incidents from his Ancestor's past in a series of short tales of his skills, exploits and abilities, of which this is the second.
Sifu Wo Lei Speaks
My family's well-documented History of worthy Ancestors acquainted me, via fulsome references, with Hong Lung. Like myself, a Martial Artist, but of an earlier generation which possessed astonishing skills compared to those of myself and my contemporaries. Their humble descendant, Sifu Wo Lei, dedicates these edited accounts of Hong Lung's exploits to those greater Martial Artists of his Ancestor's day.
Hong Lung's Bowl And Chopsticks
For many years Hong Lung had diligently practised Shaolin 'Stone-Pointing Arts'. Nature had endowed him with strength since his childhood and his abilities and skills as a Martial Artist and Teacher of the Changquan style of Wu Shu were well-known throughout the Province.
In the courtyard of his house he had set-up a huge stone pillar. Every day, Hong Lung would stand in front of the pillar, often for hours at a time and poke it with his outstretched first and middle fingers. After a few years, hollows and indentations pock-marked the pillar's stony face which was literally covered in holes. Amongst Hong Lung's Kung Fu Students it was frequently referred to as "the Master's beehive".
Hong Lung ran a thriving Kung Fu School in his native town and taught his students many secret exercises but he would never teach them his Stone-Pointing Arts. One of his pupils became very angry at this and, because Hong Lung refused to teach him the secret of the art he became so angry that in a blind rage he decided to kill his Teacher.
So, biding his time, he waited for an opportunity until, one day, he sighted his Master all by himself, eating dinner in a quiet local restaurant.
The Student rushed into the restaurant wielding a long spear. When Hong Lung saw the pupil with his spear he picked up his bowl calmly and used it with one hand to ward off the thrusts of the spear, then catching the spear-point in the bottom of his bowl he poked his chopsticks into the pupil's face. Two neat round holes appeared, just above the pupil's nose, one either side, and screaming in pain the pupil fled only to collapse outside on the restaurant's steps and die.
Hong Lung re-seated himself calmly at his table and went on with his meal.
Wo Lei's Notes
Unable to control his emotions and attacking enraged the pupil neglected his defence. It was this plus treachery towards his Master which killed him. The secrets of this particular technique of Hong Lung, lost when he died, were rediscovered by a later Teacher of the same style. My own Master knew these but passed on only an outline to me.
