Honors from Antarctica

The on time arrival at the airport must have seemed the warmest homecoming after 18 days in the icy Antarctica

. There were four members of the Antarctica expedition who had returned home to a hero's reception after almost three weeks at the foot of the Earth. This makes up history and an incredibly emotional event for us all.

A welcome party was set when the arrival day of the scientific expedition in Antarctica finally came after the unwanted weather restricted them for about 10 additional days. An hour before the plane had arrived, immediate relatives and friends sat in black plastic airport chairs watching closely the large windows on the runway and glimpsing at their watches. Down the hall, 25 students together with instructors and parents, nibbling turkey sandwiches and were ready to coddle their teacher with hugs.

The welcome troops brought a bouquet of heart shaped balloons, a dozen roses and a stack of handmade welcome signs bearing pictures of penguins. The four team members brought two backpacks of meteorites which will be taken photographs, cut open and experimented and shared tales about their accomplished mission. The quest also compromised two retired NASA astronauts, a scientist from NASA and a resident of Chicago who contributed significantly in funding part of the expedition.

The journey leads the team to the Patriot Hills of Antarctica, South Pole and Thiel Mountains not so high as the Rockies, yet just as stunning.Arriving in the States, there was a complaint made with regard to the technology brought along the trip. Satellite phones ended up being useless. They make you remember too much what you left behind. Much earlier than expected he will regain a position as a professor of astronomy and geology in a populated continent.

This kind of adventure in an unfamiliar territory was not the first one for these people. It was from the coast of the Black Sea where the two and their scientific team viewed the solar eclipse in Turkey last summer. What they experienced over there is similar to the situation of their unexpected yet extended stay in Antarctica. Other than the eclipse that they initially went there for they also had to stay because of a very strong earthquake. Around 5.5 was the magnitude of the earthquake that they felt because they were 200 miles away from its epicenter.

The best part of the Antarctica trip for him was the camaraderie apart from the blue ice fields and the snow covered scenery which was far less terrifying. Other than having a retired NASA scientist on board the team was said to be an exclusive club. This group of people was down to earth and you could easily speak with them. They favored fun over egos. In Antarctica they rode on snowmobiles, talked, read, and went cross country skiing even during their unexpected series of days.

For a 24 year old team member speaking with reporters and staff members what she planned to wear on such a trip a month ago consisted of heavy gloves, boots, goggles, and an energetic smile. Back home she wore jeans and sneakers and a sweatshirt plus her cheerful smile. She was an avid fan of space science and this made her a participant in the Mars like continent trip. The students themselves received a different experience. Kids tying everything in leads to learning.

Teachers who are also explorers allow the kids to live science and history. For her experiments during the trip, they were about temperature, rocks, and gravity, much like what students back home are doing. Used to transmit the information to 11 classrooms were satellite phone and email as well. The questions raised and answers that were provided were hilarious. With the answers given, funny was how they differed. For this teacher, she was able to teach the students that results are susceptible to change when you are in a snowy desert with temperatures that can well go below zero.
