Honouring Patriotism And Unity In Abu Dhabi National Day Celebrations

On the 2nd December each year Abu Dhabi comes alive with displays of national pride and glory

. Commemorating the unification of seven emirates in 1971 to form the United Arab Emirates, the National Day celebrations of the capital city rival many around the world.

A little more than 40 years ago the city of Abu Dhabi was just a fishing village, ruled by the Al Nahyan clan of the Bedouin nomads. Settlements dating back to 5500 BC have been found in the region, and later overland and marine trade routes brought caravans, ships and prosperity to these villages. Its function as the gateway to the East brought in the Portuguese and eventual British rule of the region. As the 1960s heralded the discovery of oil in the sands of the Emirates, and the British were finding it difficult to finance their commonwealths, Sheik Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan united the seven sheikdoms of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain to form the United Arab Emirates. Each state is governed separately by its own emir, but these chiefs of states, headed by an elected president, come together to address common issues.

As the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi has an obligation to put up the biggest celebration and it does not disappoint. In 2011 for the 40th anniversary, events showcasing its culture and history started a month ahead and culminated in extravagant parades and festivities. The two day holiday is usually kicked off with a breathtaking fireworks display over the Corniche promenade overlooking the Arabian Sea. The scene is lively and very exciting as locals both Emiratis and expatriates - gather at the lawns and cafes to have a good time. A carnival atmosphere is brought to life with most of the citys skyscrapers donning lights of white, red, and green.

National Day also means concerts featuring world renowned artists during these days. Yas Island hosts a decorated vehicle parade that attracts an exhilarated young crowd. During the day, the official parade includes displays of military weapons, planes and helicopters to give another boost to the pride of the people. This year, the Al Ain Aerobatic Show 2012 has been brought forward from January as a special treat for the locals and visitors.
