Hop Around The Canaries

The Canary Islands have something to offer even the most seasoned traveller

, and island hopping is a great way to explore them with a difference. Instead of sitting around the pool or downing a Cosmopolitan, hop onto one of the many ferries or boats and see the Canaries as they should be.

When youre looking for a refuge, youll find it just a short boat ride away on the beautiful island of Lobos, a tranquil and serene island thatll be just what the doctor ordered. Prepare to be surprised at what cheap holidays 2012 can offer when you arrive here, a haven for a variety of flora and fauna thats rarely seen elsewhere. Initially named after the sea wolves that used to live there, it is now home to a number of endangered birds including the Grey Grey Shrike, the Cream Coloured Cursor and the Hubara Bustard. Other creatures to keep an eye out for are the Haria Lizard and the Crocodile Ghecko; not quite as pretty to look as at the birds but charming nonetheless.

Another smaller and lesser known island to hop to on your cheap last minute holidays is La Graciosa, a quaint island with just 500 residents. What sets La Graciosa apart from the other islands are that the waters surrounding it are the only two marine and fishing reserves found in the Canary Islands many locals rely solely on fishing as their main source of income. This is a great place to visit to imagine what all of the Canary Islands once were like. Whats even quainter is that there is a lack of tarmac roads, with sand roads the order of the day.

Leave Gran Canaria till last, as this impressive island needs time to be explored what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in character and charm. Perhaps the most cosmopolitan of the Canary Islands, there is always a cultural event or celebration happening here the only thing to do is join in! And as well as a great deal of water sports to enjoy here, one thing you must do is a camel ride; wander through the sand dunes of Las Maspalomas on a lazy, hazy transport of camel - youll think youre in the Sahara! If youre looking for a more sedate way to spend the day, take advantage of the 10 golf courses dotted around the island. Dont worry if you havent got your clubs (not exactly ideal island hopping luggage after all), you can always rent them from the golf clubs here. Or for a more daring day out, try the islands theme parks, in particular Cocodrilo Park, which has over 300 crocodiles, or Sioux City, a Wild West themed park where you can-can with the best of them. Yee-hah!
