Hose Couplings And Different Types

Hose couplings, or also known as hose adapters

, are used to attach one end of a hose to another hose, a tap, or other types of hose appliances such as an irrigation sprinkler. Although simple as it may seem, these couplings or adapters may vary between its uses and purposes.

There are different types of hose couplings used in many different functions. Some maybe as simple as hose adapters for garden hoses, while some may be used for a more heavy duty purpose, such as couplings for fire hoses or other types of high pressure hoses.

Different types of hose couplings

Here are some examples of hose couplings used in different purposes:

Hoselink and hozelock

These types of hose adapters are some of the most popular and well used couplings in the market. Hoselinks are a bayonet type of coupling utilizing a 0 Ring compression to provide a watertight connection, while the hozelock is a push-fit connector. Both are normally used for home and commercial garden hose.

Expansion ring

These types of hose couplings are mostly used for a more sophisticated purpose compared to hoselinks and hozelocks. This is commonly used is a push-fit connector. It also has the advantage of providing no flow restriction, as the expansion ring normally expands to match the inner diameter of the hose. These types of hose adapters may only be installed with special machinery using a drawbar expander.

Holedall

These types of hose adapters have three different types, the mulconroy, IX, and Scovill or Rostra.

Mulconroy: Also known as Holedall Swaged are normally used on larger diameter hoses which are mostly known for its higher pressure applications or where the hose is exposed to higher end pull such as oil suction and discharge. Similar to expansion rings, these are mostly installed with the use of a special machinery.

IX: Or also known as Holedall IX, are specialized hose couplings used mainly for higher pressure applications, which is also similar to mulconroy.

Scovill/Rostra: Also known as Holedall Internally Expanded Hose Coupling are used primarily on fuel oil hose applications. And similar to mulconroy and IX, these types of hose couplings are installed with the use of a special machinery.
