The key to taking proper care of your hot tub is the in maintaining the quality of the water. If the quality of the water slips, it will begin to damage the various parts of the hot tub, as well become potentially harmful to the people soaking in it. Sometimes the purity of the water is compromised by microbes like bacteria, algae or even viruses, but often the water is sullied by too many of the chemicals that are made to keep those microbes in check.

There is a zone wherein the water is balanced and pure. The pH will be between 7.2 and 7.8, the water hardness will be between 250 and 500 ppm (parts per million, see your test strips for instructions). The water will neither be populated with microscopic organisms nor polluted with excess chemicals.

Chlorine, the most commonly used and widely available sanitizer for swimming pools and hot tubs, smells like bleach and irritates the eyes and skin. It is, however, unnecessary since the advent of devices called ionizers that utilize ions from minerals, ozone and ultraviolet light. These units sterilize the water without leaving behind chemical residues that interfere with our enjoyment of hot tubs and swimming pools.

Ozonators have been used in conjunction with chemicals for a long time, but current trends involve pairing up the ozone "shock" treatment with the other ionizers to completely sanitize the water with a totally chemical-free system. Another common strategy incorporates a shock oxidizer capsule or granulate that is put into the water, but the residues of which are solidified and removed via the pool's or hot tub spa's filtration system.

Ideally the water in a hot tub should be drained and replaced every three months, regardless of the sanitization strategy, but with proper care and an investment in smart sterilizing strategies, the purity can be maximized and maintain for the longest possible duration.
