Sanitizing the water in your hot tub with chlorine or another sanitizer is important

in keeping your water clean and free from dangerous bacteria that can cause severe disease. Hot tubs, like swimming pools, can become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs if they are not properly maintained.

In addition to sanitizing your hot tub with chlorine, there are other necessary maintenance steps that must be taken. To keep your hot tub clean and safe you should practice regular maintenance. Your maintenance schedule should include checking the following in addition to sanitizing with hot tub chlorine.

"Chlorine: Hot tub chlorine is perfect for maintaining the sanitizing level in your hot tub. Chlorine is one of the most used sanitizers to kill germs and bacteria. Place the appropriate amount of chlorine in the dispenser and you, your family, and your friends can enjoy a clean, healthy hot tub.

"pH balance: pH tester strips will help you determine the level of pH in hot tub water. The proper amount is between 7.2-7.8.

"Alkaline: The alkaline must be balanced to prevent damage to the pipes and jets in your hot tub.

"Water hardness: You can use a spa water test strip to check the hardness of the water. If it is too hard, you should drain water out of the hot tub and add fresh water to it. Hard water can lead to scale deposits. If the water in your hot tub is too soft, it can cause damage to the metal fixtures.

"Water level: Hot tub water level should be maintained and should be changed every two months. While the hot tub shell is empty, wipe down the walls. You should wipe the walls down at the water level regularly to prevent a ring from developing.

"Leaks: Check for leaks regularly. You should check the hot tub shell for leaks as well as the plumbing.

"Corrosion: You should regularly check for corrosion to prevent permanent damage to the hot tub.

"Debris: Remove leaves and other debris daily to prevent clogging the filter and to help keep hot tub water clean.

"Filter: Clean or replace the hot tub filter weekly. A clean filter helps keep the system running smoothly and prevents the possibility of damaging the pump.

In addition to using hot tub chlorine, the hot tub should be shocked weekly to kill off bacteria and other germs that can cause and spread disease.

Keep the hot tub covered when not is use to help keep dirt and debris out. In addition to helping to keep the water clean, a cover also helps keep children and pets from accidentally falling in. Wipe the cover off frequently to remove dust and debris. You will need to occasionally clean the inside of the cover.

Make sure that you read and follow all of the manufacturer"s directions listed on hot tub chemicals. Keep all hot tub chemicals stored in a dry place away from pets and children. After applying chemicals, be sure to wait the appropriate amount of time before entering the water.

Properly maintaining your hot tub will help keep the water clean, clear and safe for you and your family"s enjoyment year after year.
