Exploring Adelaide

How much do you know about Adelaide? Not much? Neither did I, before I went there on my honeymoon. Now I know a great deal about Adelaide and I am left with a great deal to learn still!

Adelaide, Australia's fifth largest city and the capital of South Australia, is spread out on both sides of the lovely Torrens River. South Australia was once home to more than 10,000 aboriginal people who spoke more than 50 different languages! However, the modern day Adelaide is a bustling cosmopolitan city apart from being a world-class tourist attraction.

Dry during most other months, Adelaide provides a paradise for trekking enthusiasts. People come here from all over the world to trek the hundreds of paths that meander through parks, terraces, mountain ranges, city ranges and along the river Torrens.

People of all walks come to Adelaide to experience its many delights. Wineries, food outlets, natural sceneries, wildlife, parks, hills, treks " the list goes on. My personal experience with Adelaide started with the Honeymoon Suite at the hotel Adelaide InterContinental, located prominently in the citys new Riverbank Promenade.

The guest rooms, including our special suite, are all done in the classical style, furnished with great taste. Each room comes with a luxury bathroom that includes a marble bath and a separate walk-in shower. The hotel offers a full-fledged gym, spa facilities and a hydrotherapy pool to boot! Much as I wanted to stay within this Adelaide hotel, the citys charms called to me through the walls and I had to step out and explore it!

The city took shape in the 1800s under the capable hands of Colonel William Light. Several landmarks of the city were laid during this phase, notably the Botanic Gardens and the Pioneer Women's Memorial.

The city has many restored Victorian and Edwardian buildings, and a walk down old quaint streets is like taking a walk through history. The Art Gallery of South Australia offers a walk-through of Australian history. The South Australian Museum is home to the largest collection of Aboriginal artifacts in the southern hemisphere.

The Central Market is one of Adelaide's best-known landmarks. The largest market in the southern hemisphere, this market does not allow any plastic bags! For the culture buff, theres the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the Adelaide Festival, the Womadelaide Festival and many other events throughout the year.

Adelaide also has flower shows from September to November. If you happen to visit Adelaide during this period, be sure to catch this splendid feast to the eyes.
