Hotel management, also known as hospitality management is a growing discipline of academics around the world. The subject often has various degrees that are conferred on students by universities and colleges.

The main focus of this discipline is on the management of hospitality operations in hotels, restaurants, resorts, aboard cruise ships, destination marketing organisations, country clubs, and more. When a student graduates with a degree in this discipline, he or she may directly apply to any organisation belonging in the aforementioned categories to begin a career that will eventually lead to a senior management position in one of the world class hospitality organisations or an independent ownership if the person is an entrepreneur.

In America, the hotel management degree follows a curriculum that mostly incorporates the courses found in a business degree but with a focus on the hospitality industry and its management functions. The core subjects of this degree are administration, accounting, finance, information systems, marketing, human resource management, public relations, and strategy among others. Degree specific coursework for this program also includes restaurant management, lodging operations, global tourism, attractions management, event management, and food preparation. Many hotel management programs require that the applicant must have some field experience of working within the industry as an intern or as a co-operative placement candidate.

The marketing major in the hotel management degree has many components that relate to all businesses including specifically the hospitality industry. One of the key subjects is web design, specifically, hotel web design, as well as restaurant web design. These subjects are generally taught as a part of the marketing program but are independent programs on their own in the media related coursework.
