Via Nazionale (in English National Road) is one of the main arteries that goes through the historic centre of Rome. Originally named Via Pia, after the Blessed Pope Pius IX, who wanted to create a main thoroughfare that connected the main train train Station, Termini, to the city centre. The road was finally completed at the end of the 19th century. This was a part of the new Rome, in preparation of the city becoming the capital of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. The road has since been modified and expanded, with an extension leading to the east bank of the River Tiber.

Today, Via Nazionale is a popular shopping street for the locals and tourists alike. You will find all types of shops, cafes and restaurants along this 1-kilometre stretch of road. Some notable buildings are also found along Via Nazionale, such as Palazzo delle Esposizioni (1883), Palazzo Koch (site of the Banca d'Italia) (1892) and the Church of Saint Paul's Within the Walls (1880) and you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes. The road also has excellent transport connections, with several major bus routes passing by for in the direction of the Vatican, Piazza Navona, Isola Tiberina, etc, as well as the Repubblica metro station to the northside.
