Houston Texans: Is 2010 Their Year?

The 9-7 performance by the Houston Texans in the 2009 NFL campaign was certainly

not stellar - but it may have been a harbinger of the great things to come. The Texans themselves seem to believe that they have nothing but good fortune ahead, as they used most of their 2010 draft picks to add increased depth to their roster.

Rather than focusing on impact offensive skills players, the Texans instead used their selections to grab some highly touted college players that should provide the team with many options throughout the coming seasons.

Kareem Jackson

Alabama's cornerback prospect in the draft was certainly not expected to be a Houston choice, but there is little downside to the team having passed on Kyle Wilson. Jackson has demonstrated his ability to be a total team player, and his selection is certainly a signal from the Texans management that they believe they have the primary pieces in place to make a run and can now focus on team chemistry.

The new Big Ben

The Steelers might not have the only Big Ben on the field when the 2010 season starts, as the Texans grabbed an outstanding big running back out of Auburn. Ben Tate should be able to run with the best of them at the NFL level, as he has a big body and a crushing impact on opposing defenders. In fact, it is likely that the Texans will have him in action very early in the season.

Dickerson

Perhaps the most surprising event of the draft in 2010 was the fact that Dorin Dickerson was still around when it came time for the 227th draft selection of the year. Te big tight end had an outstanding senior season with the Nittany Lions, but for some reason plummeted during the draft as teams failed to select him. Quarterback Matt Schaub will eventually find that Dickerson will be one of his favorite players to throw a ball to it.

Look for the Texans to make a lot of headway in the AFC South, as they once again vie with the Colts for the division championship. In fact, Peyton's team may prove the only thing capable of stunting the Texans' growth in 2010.
