We live in an incredibly confusing world and Britain must be one of the most confused countries within it

. We are deep within a double dip recession that has no signs of receding, and money is scarce. The average member of society cannot afford to go to university or send their children to one, and to get yourself onto the property ladder is close to impossible. We are also in a generation now that has been regaled by stories of the war. Horror stories of ration books lost lives, of a society that was struggling to live a good life, not too dissimilar to the way we are today.

The irony is no matter how poor we get as a nation and no matter how difficult it is for a family to keep on top of their day to day outgoings, we are control by fashion crazes. If you do not have the latest mobile phone you are a nobody, if you do not have the latest laptop you are a loser and if you do not have the latest fashionable clothes you will never get a partner and you will never get a job. This is how fickle a nation we have become. They say success breeds success, which is a saying some people in this country have taken too literally, spending money they do not have on things they do not need.

To a certain extent it is understandable that people spend a lot of money on clothes and mobile phones because these things break and become unusable but when it comes to computers and laptops this is a different story. This is hardware that costs a lot of money and it is hardware that can last a lifetime. Unless you drop the equipment or spill something on it, theoretically these pieces of kit should last a lifetime. However, if it isnt the new macbook air then the younger generation are not interested.

This is an ethos that spells trouble for the nation. If a computer is old and becoming slow to use you can invest 50-100 in some new ram memory that will make it more than twice as fast and add years onto its life span. However, the majority of people would chose to throw it away and buy a new one which will cost anywhere upwards of 300.

Despite our parents and grandparents living through two world wars and the television today being dominated by the recession that is blighting our country, the future generation are yet to learn that it is always better to upgrade than to start again.
