How A Sales Letter Could Save You Money While Saving The Planet
Have you ever noticed how many catalogues go out at this time of year
?
If you work in a school office or any kind of firm where mail order is used I'm sure you will. The amount is mind boggling.
Having worked for a large courier company for several years, I have often questioned the need for this in these days of internet marketing and sales.
I have delivered literally box upon box of catalogues to firms and schools, none of which appreciate them I might add. Without exception, there is always a groan and a reference to the skip out the back.
Now if you consider just how many schools there are, just in one small area. I have personally delivered to nine in just one post code and fourteen in another. If you consider that each one recieves aproximately six different varieties of catalogue,
and about three of those come in boxes containing three or four catalogues covering their various ranges, at the very least that works out at twelve each, that's a whopping 276 catalogues in two post code areas just to schools.
Of course I'm just scratching the surface here. If you move on to the firms and big companies that recieve them, you're moving into thousands. I have delivered over twenty boxes, each containing four big catalogues from one particular mail order company, all to the same place, each one addressed to a different person within that firm.
And all destined for the skip. "We don't use them," is the usual comment, "We buy online. Everything is on their website."
The cost in terms of enviromental issues must be astronomical! I can't begin to imagine just how many trees are destroyed to create these massive numbers across the whole of the country, remember I'm just talking about two postcodes, in one town, in one country!
The cost financially must run into millions, and most destined for landfill. I suppose some will get back to the recycling plant, but in what amounts I have no idea. The whole thing is just mind boggling.
Now I understand the need for these companies to get into their customers faces, or at least into their thoughts, but baring in mind all these firms have a website displaying all their wares, as I've been constantly told, so wouldn't it be therefore more economical, both financially and enviromentaly, to simply send out sales letters
every now and then? Considering the amount of money they could save on the production of all those catalogues, I would think they could send out sales copy several times a year and still spend less!
Even the postage would be less. I guess I shouldn't be sugesting such things, I'm doing a lot of couriers out of a lot of work, but this amount of waste can't be good for anyone, and least of all the planet.
So come on you big mail order companies, do the planet a favour. You all like to spout about be enviromentaly friendly, how about backing that up with some action and save yourselves some money into the bargain?
Do the planet a favour, send out a sales letter, and scrap the catalogues.
