How About Chef Salaries?

One of the biggest things that can be vastly different

, if you're going to be a chef, is chef salaries. Certainly a chef at Dennys isn't going to get what a chef at a big restaurant gets. However, if you are to look at the typical National Salary for an Executive chef, you'd find that the average is $42,000 - $66,000 a year.

Certainly what city that you live in can have a lot to do with what you get paid. New York, for example, ranges all the way from $55,000 to a whomping 90,000 a year.

Denver is at the low-end with the average $45,000 - 65,000 rating (as rated by payscale.com)

A pastry chef will only get $10.24 to $14.99 an hour, on the other hand. Their yearly rate will be from $24,000 - $42,000 a year. Pastry chefs are paid about the least of any chef, even though they make some of the best tasting foods of any chef. Strange how things like that go. You'd think that they would get paid more than a regular chef. My mother was best at cooking deserts, and that's what she did best.

Although a head cook can get an average of $31,000 - $49,000 a year; a head chef in Atlanta, GA, on the other hand, can get anywhere between $40,000 and $90,000.

So, as you can see, it varies. Chef salaries can vary, widely, depending upon what state you live in. A head chef/cook will get exactly the same amount as a head chef does.

A sous chef (under-chef of the kitchen) gets from $28,000 - $42,000 a year, with little profit sharing and few bonuses. They are the direct assistant to the head chef, and would be second-in-command. Many small restaurants don't have a sous chef.

There are many different kinds of chefs other than just these chefs including a fish chef, roundsman, vegetable chef, butcher, saute chef, roast chef, fry chef, pantry chef, and grill chef.

The Roundsman is a swing cook who will be able to fill-in whenever other chefs aren't there. The other kinds of chefs are rather self-evident. A butcher can sometimes be placed in the same category as a chef, even though it would seem that he's only cutting up meat... however, they oftentimes create many meat-related foods that you might be unaware of. They might bread and season various fish and meats, as well as create such things as sauerbraten (meat soaked in vinegar and spices for a long time).

You might say that chef salaries tend to be on the low end of the spectrum, as far as salaries go; however, you can almost always get a job as a chef no matter how bad the economy gets. Nobody stops eating when a depression hits. It was a well-known fact that the things people kept doing were restaurants, movies and the theatre. Everybody has to have fun.
