Basic AC Functioning
Your building essentially becomes an oversized refrigerator when you use air conditioning. The AC system will utilize Freon to cool your air just as your refrigerator uses Freon to keep your lunch edible.
Here is a quick rundown of how AC systems function:
1. Freon is compressed so it gets very hot.
2. That hot Freon is pumped through a series of coils where its heat is emitted.
3. The hot Freon comes out of the coil as a liquid.
4. That liquid Freon is allowed to dissipate into a cool gas.
5. The cool gas runs through another set of coils.
6. Air from the building is sucked into the cool coil where it is cooled and then blown back out into the building.
Air con systems work this cycle over and over with warm air from the natural environment being sucked in, cooled, and blown back out.
The Filtering Process
A good air conditioning system for the commercial or industrial environment will also include some type of filtering system. These filters collect allergens and other particles from the air prior to it being blown back out into the building. This gives an added benefit to using air conditioning since the working environment becomes safer and more pleasant for workers.
AC System Types
There are just two main types on the market right now:
1. Portable systems
2. Split systems
Portable air conditioners are just what they sound like: AC systems that are compact and lightweight so they can easily be moved from one room to another as needed. They are used for temporary cooling of one small area.
A split system is what most people are familiar with from their homes. There will typically be a larger air conditioning unit outside the building with a thermostat on the wall inside. Air ducts travel through the walls and connect the inside vents, thermostat, and outside AC unit together. Air travels from the outside unit through the ducts to be dispersed through the inside vents.
This is the type of AC system that will keep your entire building cool to the temperature you select on an ongoing basis.
