How ActiveX Control can Helps us in our Internet Explorations
Wonder what an Active X means and how effective it is on your system? An Active X is a framework for defining reusable software components in a programming language independent kind of way. Software applications can then be composed from one or more of these components in order to provide their functions.
Active X was introduced in 1996 by Microsoft as a development of its Component Object Model (COM) and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) technologies. It is commonly used in its Window operating system. This is although the technology itself is not tied to it.
Many Microsoft Windows applications - including many of those from Microsoft itself such as Internet Explorer, Microsoft office, Microsoft Visual Studio and Windows Media Player use Active X controls to build their own functionality as ActiveX controls. These can be embedded into other applications.
Internet Explorer also allows embedding ActiveX controls onto web pages. ActiveX controls or small program building blocks can serve to create distributed applications that work over the Internet through web browsers. Examples include customized applications for gathering data, for viewing certain kinds of files and for displaying animation.
ActiveX controls are comparable with Java applets as programmers designed both of these mechanisms to allow web browsers to download as well as execute them. They also differ: Java applets can run on nearly any platform while Active X components officially operate only with Microsoft's Window's operating system. Programmers can write ActiveX controls in any language which supports COM component development, including the following language/environments:
? C++ either directly or with the help of libraries such as ATL or MFC.
? Borland Delphi
? Visual Basic
? Net Framework
An ActiveX control is also a plug-in or a small program written in C++ and Visual Basic. Just like Java applets, ActiveX controls are small applications that run within web browsers. Programs that support such plug-ins are called ActiveX containers or component containers. Microsoft Internet (the standard web browser for the Windows operating system) uses ActiveX controls or objects to facilitate rich media playback. This type of control in Internet Explorer allows users to watch video clips on web pages. Media Player can be used separately to watch the clips. A pre-loaded ActiveX control can access Media Player's functionality and play these clips in Internet Explorer.
Browser window, another example of an ActiveX object is Flash ActiveX control. Flash files can only be played by an Adobe flash player. Some websites are programmed entirely with Flash (which Internet Explorer cannot play). Therefore, a Flash ActiveX component is installed to view the site. It automatically detects sites containing flash files and access Flash Player to play the files directly on the browser window.
ActiveX control makes it fast and easy for developers as well as web producers to create unique, interactive Web sites that will make the Internet fundamentally more useful and productive.
