How Babies Can Be Hearing Impaired Too
Hearing problems in babies in America are not detected until they are about two years and chances are by this time it might already be a lasting handicap according to a panel in the National Institutes of Health. A new technology has now surfaced making it possible for the detection of hearing problems on new born and the NIH committee advocated the use of this. The proposal was presented to an audience composed of healthcare workers who care for deaf and hearing impaired children and they greatly applauded it. The committee, organized by the National Institute of Health primarily to recommend the best standard medical care for hearing impaired infants said, that about one in every 1,000 new born babies in the US are born deaf. Currently, less than half of the hearing impaired cases on infants are seen as there is a mandatory screening only for babies who have a higher risk of getting it. With the proper screening and diagnosis of a child by the time they are three years of says the chairman of the committee and a professor at Loyola University in Chicago then damage to the speech and language capabilities of the child is unalterable.
The professor further stated that around two and one half years old is the average age a child should be screen for hearing problems however in the future they plan to lower the age to about 6 months. Now the market has better and more advanced technologies that allow doctors to test new born for any hearing damages. At the same time a new recommendation had been made for since a new way of screening is available where babies can be tested for hearing problems by looking for otoacoustic emissions.
The test involves the use of an earphone like device that makes a clicking sound and then detects an echo like response from the inner ear. With a computer studying the response it will be able to tell if the inner ear is working well or not. A secondary test will be done called auditory brainstem responses to confirm if there is hearing loss once the infant fails this first test. The secondary test will need for a contraption to be affixed on the infant's head and then there will be a clicking sound made. The sensor will be able to pick up a brain wave patter once the sound is normally heard.
In line with this, the two tests are able to analyze the responses to the sound. The cost of the otoacoustic emission testing would be about $25 and the more complex second test is $75 to $125. If all US new born were screened after birth, it would cost the nation $150 million to $200 million, but it could save the country billions of dollars by increasing the earning power of those who get early treatment.
There will be a loss of about $400,000 to $800,000 in lifetime earnings for a child who is not properly detected with hearing problems by the age of three since their speech skills is now affected. Studies have shown that high school graduates, whose hearing loss was not detected early on, usually have a fourth to seventh grade level reading skills. There is really a clear difference when a child is diagnosed with hearing impairments earlier as they are now able to go to normal schools rather than the more expensive specialized one. Being able to see hearing problems earlier will grant the country more savings.
