How Bacterial Vaginosis Can Be Treated
If you do indeed have bacterial vaginosis, you have a number of treatment options to select from
. The conventional approach is to take antibiotics. Metronidazole, also known as Flagyl, is commonly used. It comes in pill form and as a gel. Some prefer the pill because it's not quite as messy. Clindamycin and tinidazole are two other antibiotics are that often used.
Antibiotics have shown to be an effective bacterial vaginosis treatment for awhile, but a lot of patients have claimed that the symptoms returned within 12 months. Specifically, more than half of all cases result in recurring bacterial vaginosis.
In this situation, more antibiotics will likely be prescribed, and the cycle continues. As of now, the medical community has yet to disclose any causes for recurrence.
Antibiotics do come with side effects as well, specifically oral medication, though in most cases they aren't significant. But, it can cause complications for women who are pregnant, such as preterm labor. It has also been connected to pelvic inflammatory disease, which is a rather serious condition.
In some cases, treatment isn't even necessary. Symptoms will sometimes go away on their own within a few days. So if you get bacterial vaginosis, considering waiting a few days. If it does go away, it means that the lactobacilli in your vagina increased in levels. This is the good bacteria that fights against bacterial vaginosis.
While antibiotics might permanently cure bacterial vaginosis, it has less than a 50% chance of doing so.
If you want an alternative treatment that is healthier for your body, then natural remedies are the answer. They don't cost nearly as much, and if used properly won't result in any side effects.
Quite a few women are proponents of hydrogen peroxide. This form of peroxide is an effective oxidizer, and therefore applied often as a cleaning agent.
When applied as a remedy for bacterial vaginosis, hydrogen peroxide is mixed with water and inserted into the vagina using a douche. This can be done 1-2 times per day for up to a week, depending on whether the type of results you're getting.
Before antibiotics were used as a treatment for bacterial vaginosis, hydrogen peroxide was the most commonly used cure.
A tampon can be a substitute for douching when applying peroxide. Before using hydrogen peroxide, always mix with water first. The ratio of peroxide to water should be less than 50:50, meaning that it should contain more water than peroxide.
One women too another approach; she added baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to a nice, warm bath. She claimed doing this for four days and getting good results.
