How Beads Have Been Used

Way, way back in time, during the infamous Stone Age

, beads were crafted primarily for adorning the body as decoration. However, they were also used for great trading resources on other occasions and sometimes between people of different tribes. Fast forward this time to two thousand years later and beads were crafted out of coral and other semi precious substances. In ancient Greece there is evidence that carnelian beads and beads made of lapis lazuli was worn by the wealthier members of society. Clearly the rich saw them as a status symbol. At about 2800BC it is known that the use of semi-precious stone beads began to emerge and become popular among the Syrians. With great innovation and a taste for fashion and colour, they fashioned beads from materials like agate and serpentine.

Time has moved on and yet our love for beads has remained much the same, only more sophisticated. Beaded jewellery has become increasingly more valuable and popular with a wide variety of people of all ages and backgrounds and certainly not just the very rich. However, for those of real discerning taste in beads, gold and other semi-precious stones are often used to craft beaded jewellery. One wonders if time really has moved on much.

One of the most popular pieces of beaded jewellery to stand the test of time is glass jewellery, crafted from beads. There is significant evidence of the first glass beads appearing in society around 2180 BC when glassmaking was common in Mesopotamia.

Glass beads may have been popular then but the truth is they are still just as popular now. It seems this really is a timeless piece of jewellery. The fact that they are highly durable and inexpensive has aided this longevity. Different cultures the world over have seen the simplistic potential as jewellery and just wearing a few beads as part of your jewellery decoration can add huge style to your attire. If you need inspiration from old, just look to the Egyptian and Phoenician culture. They are renowned for their use of glass to make fabulous beaded jewellery. A sign of their importance in these ancient cultures is the fact that beaded jewellery was commonly found buried with wealthy pharaohs in the ancient tombs of Egypt. Even poorer families would bury their dead with glass beads. Whilst this may not be the case nowadays, they still have a significant role to play, from small children to older adults.
