How Brother Ink Recycles Its Toners, Inkjet Cartridges, And Other E-waste

As one of the major manufacturers of toners and ink cartridges today

, Brother ink has implemented some ways and means in reducing the electronic waste in landfills. One of these ways includes an Australian initiative to give end users a chance to participate at little to no cost to them. The "Close the Loop" Initiative aims to recycle all kinds of electronic wastes, including photocopier toner bottles and drums as well as old printer models. This program requires users to send back their empty or broken cartridges and machines to Brother through prepaid post.

Getting Rid of Old or Broken Ink Cartridges and Toners

In cooperation with Planet Ark, an Australian organization working towards the preservation of the environment, Brother Australia has been using the Green Machine to remanufacture these discarded electronic products into something new. The aluminum and steel parts of the cartridges, bottles, and drums were smelted and remolded into new products. The ink from photocopier toners and inkjet cartridges was reused in producing eWood, which is a timber replacement product specially designed for this initiative. Australian consumers can take their empty toner and ink cartridges to any of the participating outlets. Large collection bins are located in locations like Australia Post and Officeworks.

In the United States, end users of Brother toners and ink cartridges may use Newgistics SmartLabel for shipping through the US Postal Service network. Some packages for Brother consumables already include a UPS or FedEx label to be used in shipping back the empty toner drums and printer cartridges. These are all free of charge because the labels and shipping costs have been pre-paid by Brother. Photocopying any of these labels isn't allowed; a new label must be printed for every shipment that contains these discarded electronic products.

Getting Rid of Old or Broken Brother Printers and Other Electronic Products

One of the Australian initiatives in dealing with old printers and similar machines is to recycle their parts. Brother is also a partner of Byteback Australia and a member of the Australia New Zealand Recycling Platform. This initiative provides free recycling services to consumers through the Product Stewardship Scheme, which began operations in July 2012. Like with the Brother ink cartridge and toner, consumer equipment deposited at collection bins are broken down and reconstructed into new products, such as the steel beams in construction, the outdoor benches in stadiums, and even the ink in ballpoint pens.

All in all, Brother's corporate offices in Australia and the United States aren't the only ones working with local businesses and organizations to protect the environment. Reportedly, Brother Singapore also launched its initiative in collecting these discarded cartridges, toner drums, and ink bottles. This is practically a worldwide effort in reducing landfill waste and to encourage the habit of reusing and recycling among end users of electronic products and equipment. More importantly, the company has been going around schools and teaching children the merits of recycling, ways of doing that, and how beneficial it will be for Mother Earth.
