An expired domain is a domain that has not been renewed. Everyone who owns a domain name can renew the domain and retain ownership of it. But some people choose not to renew their domains. After a period of time, the domain becomes available for purchase by you.

Why do people allow their domains to expire?

There are a number of reasons. Sometimes people have tried to make a website associated with that domain profitable but have been unsuccessful. Rather than keep struggling with it, they decide not to waste any more time or money and they let the domain expire.

Other times people have too many domains and not enough time to develop websites for them. Sometimes they buy a number of top level domains with the .com, . org,. .net, .info and other extensions. After a time they decide they really don't need all those domains and allow them to expire.

Still others forget or neglect to renew their domains and they are purchased by others.

Why should you look for expired domains?

Expired domains may be valuable for several reasons. First, if the previous owner attempted to develop a website, the domain has some age associated with it. Search engines often consider the age of a domain in ranking pages from the domain in search engine results. This gives the pages from the domain an edge over a brand new domain.

Second, many expired domains have backlinks. In trying to make their domain profitable, the previous owner probably worked hard to get other sites to link to the domain. Sometimes links point to the domain itself and other links may point to internal pages. All this is valuable in building the reputation and profitability of the domain.

Third, many expired domains were already receiving traffic. The domain may be getting traffic from people clicking links on other sites or from search engine results. Even if the previous website was not ranked for the keywords the old owner intended, it may have received traffic from related or long tail keywords. This traffic could well become profitable if the right promotions or offers were placed on the pages getting traffic.

Fourth, although the previous owner may not have been able to make the site for that domain profitable, you may have more skills or access to more promotional techniques. Instead of starting from scratch with a brand new domain, you have a head start with existing links, traffic and possibly search engine ranking. A few adjustments may be all it takes to generate good profits.

So, be sure to look for expired domains that have important keyword phrases in the domain name. They could be valuable assets in your business and bring you rapid profits.
