How Can A Blog Help You Get More Website Visitors?

Blogging is simply self-publishing content

Blogging is simply self-publishing content. And Google and the search engines are ravenous for content to crawl, index and retrieve.

It would seem to make sense then that having a blog is a good thing for the search engines. (Not to mention an easy feature to incorporate into your website design. But let's look at a few ways in which that can lead to more people at your site.

Do blogs really attract links?

When you're just starting out, it might feel like you're writing into a void. Some people then conclude that blogs just don't get any attention or any links.

However, research doesn't bear this out.

Let's take a look at a recent study of 1500 clients by marketing company Hubspot.

They found that the clients that blogged (which accounted for around half the group measured) had 97% more inbound links than those that didn't. They also had 55% more site visitors.

So why do links matter?

Links are the currency of the web. A link from a trusted site to your website is a valuable way of helping Google know what your site's about, and that it's seen as trusted by others.

So, all of these extra links means higher search rankings. And as most webmasters are all too aware, higher rankings can radically increase traffic and conversions.

But it doesn't just end at links

Twitter, Facebook and other forms of social media have changed the way links work in subtle ways. However, blogs still dovetail nicely with social media. In fact, blogs are a form of social media themselves.

For example. Say you write a post and someone tweets that they liked it, including a hyperlink to the post. That tweet is seen by 500 followers. 20 of those followers read the post, then tweet the link to their 500 followers. 20 of those followers do the same. And so on...

Blogs can attract traffic even without an actual permanent hyperlink from another site.

Just as useful is if you write a piece of quality content that gets to the front page of Digg or Technorati. Millions of people use these sites. Your blog post could be responsible for generating tens of thousands of extra visitors.

Add to that the long tail...

Because you're writing around your core subjects again and again, you're likely to use some long tail keywords. These are the vast number of hyper-specific keywords that searchers might enter to arrive on your site.

It's easy to dismiss these in favour of your top ten keywords. However, it's likely that up to 80% of all your search traffic comes from keywords that aren't in your top ten.

(If you've never checked your analytics to see which terms your visitors use to arrive at your site, ask your web design team to show you. It can be very illuminating. Plus, long tail phrases can also give you new ideas for blog posts!)

...And your increased reputation

Aside from traffic, one of the other benefits of blogging is that you can demonstrate your expertise and engage with customers.

However, even this can eventually attract many more people to your site. If you grow a reputation as an authority blog in your industry, word will spread around the social web, and more people will visit.

So, there you have it.

Blogging, while offering many other benefits, is a fantastic way of drawing in more web traffic. And the more people you attract, the more chances you have to sell your product or service.
