How Can Cios Leave A Positive Note With The Senior Management?

For getting a say in the companys strategic decision meetings

, CIOs need to train themselves for the skills they need to supplement their technical proficiency. Read on to know what a CIO needs to do to make it to the top echelons of a company.

How to leave a mark in a non-IT organization is an evergreen topic of discussion among CIOs. They are always up there trying to chalk out ways to affirm their position in the enterprise and leave a positive note with the senior management.

The CIO fraternity will do well to mark that the technical proficiency will only get them half way. Theyll need to collect a few secondary abilities as well as the soft skills to leave the kind of impression they want to make on the organization.

The reason the CIOs are often not invited to senior management meetings is that they dont believe the CIO can contribute to the process in a meaningful way. CIOs will need to change that perception. Theyll need to get a handle on critical skills such as finance; marketing, R&D and most importantly cultivate the power to convince.

What the CIO needs to learn exactly is the role IT will play to assist the company. Their focus must not be on technology, but on providing input how IT can be used to maximize the performance of various processes of the company. It is not something a crash course will teach them. Theyll have to devise a plan for themselves.

Every company has a set of training programs for their employees, designed to apprise workers about what the company does and the way it does. CIOs will do well to show up for some of these classes. The wealth of information they receive in these programs will help them to come up with effective strategies later. These sessions are taken by the people who have spent quite some time with the company and joining them will provide you a chance to network with them as well.

Another thing they must do is to develop working relationship with all the managers in the company. They wont be able to do that in a single day. Make it a point to introduce you to senior people working in every department. Try to have informal chat with them regarding the working of their department. These meetings will educate you about the company, readying you for the challenges ahead.

When you are learning about the parts that combine to make the company, leave the technology thing behind. You can pick it up again once you are done with your self-education program and have a network of professional relationships across the company.

A CIO must keep in mind that the top managers in such companies are usually from non-IT background and convincing them to get the latest technologies such as cloud computing software for enhancing the internal processes would be a tough nut to crack. However, if youve spent appropriate time learning about the companys business process and, at the same time, you are also comfortable with marketing, finance, etc. youll certainly find it easier to impress them. Youve pretty good chances to be called for next meeting then.
