How Can Families Share Digital Files Across Multiple Devices?

Question: Both my husband and I have our own laptops with individual iTunes accounts and we also have a shared desktop computer

. We each have an iPod, so in the past weve just managed our own music files on our respective iTunes accounts.

However, now we both have iPhones and we share and iPad and we are also looking to get our son an iPod, which would make for 6 devices total. We each have our own music still, but when we buy digital copies of movies Id like to be able to move it around from device to device without having to purchase multiple copies (though I would keep it on one device at a time to stay legal).

I know the easy answer to this is to associate all of the devices with one iTunes account, but what if I want to have all of my music on my laptop instead of our shared desktop? Also, would I be able to merge our iTunes accounts so that we have all of our music in one place?

Answer: There are several things you can do help your family share their files across all of your devices without much hassle. One way is to use one Apple ID for all of your iTunes purchases across all of your devices and then store them on your shared desktop computer. Then you can each have your individual Apple ID to store files on iCloud. If you want to share files while at home, the Home Sharing ability of each iOS device allows you to see each individual devices libraries so you can have access to everyones files that have enabled sharing.

You can also share the files on your desktop computer and then sync your personal device with your own computer and just manually manage it. To do this you just copy over items from the desktop that you want on your own laptop or vice versa and then sync your device with your computer. This process could be automated if you enable Home Sharing on both your laptop and the desktop computer.

Additionally, if you want to share files across devices but not sync to one specific machine, you can send files via a file delivery service such as SendMyWay.com. This will enable you to send the file to a device at which point that specific device can save it to their individual Apple ID on the iCloud, thus making the files available for that device without having to move it from another manually.
